Suggestions for a new category system

Alright, so in the midst of trying to clean this place up, one really annoying problem continues to crop up: our categories. I believe that straightening this out is half the battle. What we need is a clear system, wherein all categories have synergy and cohesion.

So, does anyone have any suggestions regarding what categories to keep and which ones to do away with? Obviously, we'd do way with things like Black or Blonde with Bright Red tips Hair (who made these btw?).

But what about something like Humans? Should we make that a distinction, or is NPCs enough?

    • Here's my suggestion for base categories:

      • A to Z: This is a category we use on Young Justice Wiki. Basically, it contains all articles in the Wiki, but avoids redirects and other "non-content" links that can be returned by the "all pages" listing. Also, it's used on both the Avatar Wiki and DC Animated Universe Wiki, two successful and high-quality sites.
      • Game elements (lower case 'E'): For game features like Nanos, Items, etc.
      • Game terms: For gaming terminology, like Grinding, looting, farming, etc.
      • NPCs
      • Nanos
      • Areas
      • Location
      • Real world
      • Games

    • A lot of the newer categories were made with the new NPC Template, but I never really saw a use in them, even though the template maker said they would be used for "organization".

      I'm all for this.

        Loading editor
    • A lot of them are ridiculous. Ugh! This is gonna be a long process.

Also, I'm proposing that excessively adding categories to an article be considered spam from now on.

        Loading editor
    • The Appearance Categories, in my opinion, don't really serve a purpose as

a.) The image of the characters would be above the information, anyway, thereby negating the need for the appearance descriptions in the first place.

b.) It seems the very likelihood of users actually using the categories to see which characters all have red hair, or have brown eyes, would be very low.

But, I propose to keep the species categories, as I believe these categories hold more than the other categories for hair and eye color.

What constitutes "excessive"? Otherwise, I'm all for it.

        Loading editor
    • That sounds good.

And excessive would be like someone going through 12 or so articles adding categories like "Person", "Has Hands", "Teenager".

But seriously, I've seen people adding "NPC" to a page twice.

        Loading editor
    • So, for species distinctions, we have:

      • Humans
      • Aliens
      • Animals
      • Imaginary Friends

      Is this okay?

        Loading editor
    • There's also

      • Demons
      • Evos
      • Plants
      • Cryptids
      • Robots
        Loading editor
    • Looks good. I'll mark up a quick blueprint for you to look at.

    • Took awhile, but here's a blueprint to how I envisioned the category system, based on what we talked about.

      * Index (our top category)
      ** A to Z

Game terms *Will replace 'Game element'*

              Aliens
              Animals
              Imaginary Friends
              Demons
              EVOs
              Plants
              Cryptids

    • Quick question for you.. What is the purpose of the "real world" catagory?

Also on this point... When i was doing a lot of the edits i did recently, if for example, the NPC template wasnt on the page at all, that would automatically add the tags.. NPC, (whatever location), (whatever status), (whatever show), (whatever affiliation), etc. So I would suggest having the NPC template, NOT automatically assign catagories. Because the template itself is very easy to look at and gives a LOT of good information.

I agree as well (I was against it from the start), so I decided to delete the coded part of the NPC template that added these extra categories to pages (not the sections themselves) - it didn't remove every NPC category (as some people apparently added them manually), but it should help out with the process.

Any parts that you guys want to readd (e.x. the species one, as mentioned) can easily be readded (the code for it is in the revision history, after all).

This category has stuff like the dev team for the OG game, the game itself, etc.

    • Okay and let me ask you one more thing, when you say you removed the part of the template, do you mean you removed the part that creates new tags, or the entire section. Like the appearance section for example, did you remove the section as a whole, or just the part that makes the entries add new tags?

The part that creates tags; the section is still there.

    • And if you guys need any help going through and recatagorizing stuff, just let me know <3

    • Alright, so I guess this is the conclusion. This will be the new wiki category system. I'll give Fusion Aquaabyss some time to reply before I lock this thread.

      Ahhh, progress....

        Loading editor
    • Oh before you lock this, I noticed you didnt have a "Not Available in Retro" catagory on your list. Will that still remain a catagory?

        Loading editor
    • I'm not sure, yet. I have an idea about how to continue using them, but I'll wait to let you guys in on it.

        Loading editor
    • I'm fine with this, but I do think the Not Available in Retro category should stay as is, unless you have another idea on how to implement them.

        Loading editor
    • Yeah, you guys are right. It'll stay put.

I'm gonna start work on the categories right now. Hopefully, when I get the ball rolling, you guys can join in and help.

      Alright then, boys.
